Josef Frank advocated a personal decorating style. He expressed that there’s nothing wrong with mixing old and new, with combining different furniture styles, colours and patterns. Things that you like will automatically fuse to form a relaxing entity.

Josef Frank also thought that it shouldn't appear obvious that furnishings are well thought out. In his book, Accidentism from 1958, he wrote: “... we should shape our surroundings as if they had arisen by chance”.
