Josef Frank was no fan of gamehunting and he designed several rugs with the purpose of replacing real animal skins. His rugs often resembled stone paved terraces or abstract motifs. Flowers and birds were not to be tramped upon, but you could possibly tramp upon on beasts.

The fearsome beast was intended as a counterpart to the ancient Medusa head, which the Romans frequently placed at the entrance of their homes so evil wouldn’t cross the threshold. The rug was designed around 1950 and it has been nicknamed the “Monster rug”.

Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Technische Hochschule (the Vienna University of Technology) in 1903 – 1908. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925, he founded the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleague Oskar Wlach. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Although he was already 50 when he left the burgeoning Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of Sweden’s most important designers. Read more

  • Care instructions

Effective vacuuming is the easiest and most environmentally friendly cleaning method. Do not use a vacuum cleaner with a rotary brush nozzle on long pile rugs where there is a risk of damaging the yarn and the twisted thread pairs. Note that it is quite normal for the rug to loose individual fibres when used, these are excess fibres and does not affect the general quality of the rug. If you want to get rid of excess fibres faster, you can vacuum the rug daily for an initial period.

To get a more even exposure to sunlight and wear, we recommend that you rotate the rug regularly.

To remove dry stains, we recommend scraping. Begin from the edge of the stain and scrape towards the centre. Take care not to damage the fibres. Remove wet stains by laying kitchen roll on the stain. Then use warm water and a cloth or sponge. Dampen the stain, soak up the water, then repeat the process until the stain is gone. Be careful not to wet the rug too much, as this can affect the glue which holds the yarns in place. Remember that hand tufted rugs in linen are sensitive to water, so take particular care with the amount of water you use. Do not rub the stain, as that makes it more difficult to remove, and can also damage the fibres. On greasy and other difficult stains, you can use a ph-neutral, bleach-free cleaner. Sponge thoroughly to remove all traces of the cleaner, so that the fibres can regain their natural properties.
    Residual cleaner can cause allergies.

    Professional cleaning
We recommend that the rug is cleaned by a professional cleaner, using the extraction method on a flat surface.

  • Sustainability and manufacturing

    Material

    Wool

Svenskt Tenn’s rugs are manufactured primarily by three suppliers in Sweden. The wool in the rugs comes from New Zealand, which is known for having the best animal husbandry in the world, and the warp is either of flax cultivated in France or of polyester made in Germany. The yarn is dyed in Sweden and in Italy, with colours that are approved in accordance with the EU’s REACH Regulation. It has been adopted to protect people and the environment from harmful chemicals.

    Production

Hitex was founded in 1982 in Blekinge. Here, rugs are manufactured using tufting – an ancient, traditional technique that has entered the future with the implementation of self-developed, precise, and flexible robots. Production is still conducted on a small-scale, with a focus on exclusive, high-quality custom orders. While the tufting is automated, there is still a lot of handwork involved in the process.
