The wallpaper is distemper printed on non-woven in accordance with an old tradition at Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik, where each individual machine setting is still carried out by hand by experienced distemper printers. This imbues the wallpaper design with a more vibrant feel and the technique brings us closer to Josef Frank’s original and design concept.

Josef Frank composed dreamlike wallpaper prints with realistic vegetation meeting colourful flowers of the imagination. The Aurora wallpaper was designed in 1947 and was last in production in the 1960s. Now it has been reintroduced in Svenskt Tenn’s range with its pink, blue and violet tones, reminiscent of a shimmering morning light.
Aurora is the Latin word for dawn and according to Roman mythology, Aurora is the goddess of dawn, sister of the sun god Sol and the moon goddess Luna. According to legend it was Aurora who opened the eastern gates every morning with her rosy fingers to let the sun’s chariot come forth for the day.
Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at Konstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s he designed housing estates and large residential blocks built around common courtyards in a Vienna with severe housing shortages. In 1925 he started the Haus & Garten interior firm together with architect colleagues Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. Svenskt Tenn hired Josef Frank in 1934 and just a few years later he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Remove any grease stains on the wallpaper by scraping away the excess grease with a blunt knife. Begin at the edges and work your way in so the stain doesn’t spread. Pat some potato flour or baby powder on the stain to help absorb the grease. Brush away the powder remains with a soft brush. If the grease stain remains, place a clean tissue paper on the stain and iron it on low heat.
Allow wet stains, for example mud, to dry thoroughly before brushing them with a soft brush. Many light stains can be removed with old white bread. Gently rub a piece of moist bread on the stain until it fades.
Sustainability and manufacturing
Svenskt Tenn’s wallpapers are manufactured in Sweden from non-woven material comprising synthetic fibres and paper pulp. It’s a combination that makes the material durable and easy to use. The material in the wallpapers is certified in accordance with the OEKO-Tex 100 standard. The synthetic fibres are derived from recycled material including plastic bottles, while the pulp comes from FSC-certified forests. The wallpapers’ colours and varnishes are water-soluble. They are completely free of PVC, heavy metals and other environmentally hazardous substances. Water is the only solvent used at the factory. Any production waste can be recycled as energy when incinerated and residue dyes are reused. The energy used during production is carbon offset.
All of Josef Frank’s wallpapers are printed using the distemper printing technique. The method endows the wallpaper pattern with a unique structure and vibrancy. The pattern builds a slight embossed effect in the material so that it is possible to literally feel the solid craftsmanship.
The distemper printing technique dates back to the early 1800s and nowadays is a way for Svenskt Tenn to come as close as possible to Josef Frank’s original concept. The technique makes every single roll of wallpaper unique. The wallpaper’s pattern and details can in fact vary slightly due to factors such humidity and temperature during the production process and the characteristics of the paper involved.
Five people work at the factory: Håkan and Ann, who are masters of screen printing and glue printing; Thomas, who is a colour expert; and Frida and Anna, who work with the administration and related matters. Together, they are developing their business with passion and a love for patterns.
“It can be likened to a potato print, where the pattern is built up using rollers and colours are added layer upon layer. Printing wet-on-wet gives a vivid and almost hand-painted effect.
It's equally fascinating each time the machine rolls, with wheels spinning and colours dripping. The paints are mixed and filtered before being poured into the paint vessel. The rollers are inspected and placed in the machine in the correct position. Ann sets both patterns and prints entirely manually. Afterwards, we check the pattern fitting and effect before finally rolling up the wallpaper.” - Anna Andén, CEO of Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik.
